Lighting Science——Hazards and Protection Against Glare

27 Mar.,2025

Glare is a negative visual phenomenon often overlooked, but it can cause numerous harms to the eyes.

The hazards of glare should not be underestimated. Firstly, it can significantly reduce visual quality by lowering object contrast, causing visual blurriness, affecting color perception, and leading to color distortion. Prolonged exposure to glare can result in visual fatigue, with symptoms such as dry eyes, pain, redness, and tearing. In severe cases, it may even cause headaches, nausea, and other systemic symptoms. Additionally, intense glare can harm the retina, and long-term exposure may lead to retinal diseases such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, severely affecting vision. Furthermore, glare is a major safety hazard in transportation, increasing the risk of traffic accidents. In workplaces, it can also affect workers' operational precision and safety.

Can glare cause myopia? There is a certain possibility. Long-term exposure to glare may impair the eyes' adjustment function, increasing the risk of myopia.

The hazards of glare are widespread in daily life. Strong glare can occur when the sun is at specific angles, such as during sunrise or sunset, or from reflections on snowy surfaces or near water bodies. Improper use of car headlights, overly bright streetlights, glass curtain walls, electronic screens under strong light, welding arcs, and poorly designed stage lighting can all cause glare hazards.

To reduce glare from lighting, consider using fixtures with shades or diffused designs, adjusting the lighting angle to avoid direct exposure to glare-prone areas, lowering light brightness, and using softening materials such as frosted lampshades.

Particular attention should be paid to children and the elderly, who are highly sensitive to glare. To protect their eyes, improve indoor lighting conditions and choose eye-friendly lamps with low glare values.

Recognize the hazards of glare, take effective protective measures, and safeguard your eye health.
